Buildings Cover
It is important that an accurate sum insured to rebuild your home is given. This figure is NOT the market value or purchase price of the property but the cost to rebuild. This figure will usually be provided by a surveyor or your mortgage lender.
The following website www.abi.org.uk is also useful in helping you to calculate this figure.
Contents Cover
This is the section where most people fail to give an accurate figure to replace their total contents. It is very important that the figure provide is the true cost to replace EVERYTHING in your home and must be based on the cost of replacing them BRAND NEW.
A simple way to do this is to list each room in your home on a sheet of paper and add up the value of everything in these rooms BASED ON THE NEW PRICE (and not what you may have paid for them years ago).
Please remember that even CD’s, DVD’s and other smaller items must be included as well as things like jewellery and clothing.
You may be surprised at the end result and don’t forget to include the contents of sheds and garages.
In the event that you do not give an accurate figure please note that the majority of insurers do include an “Average Clause” on policies which basically means that in the event of a claim, if you are underinsured, only a percentage of your claim will be paid.
Security is also another area to be considered. Please provide details of all door and window locks ( A 5 lever deadlock on doors and key operated window locks are usually the minimum needed for discounts).
